for your part, do not desire to be a general, or a senator, or a consul, but to be free; and the only way to this is a disregard of things which lie not within our own power.

Everyone wants to date or be friends with a person of status. We don’t care that they’re rich or beautiful; we care because everyone else does. Come to terms with this part of your primal being. We want what everyone else is having. We like what everyone else likes. Break out of the herd/tribal mentality; you’re far too special to be another copy of your mother and father or any other influences. Come to terms with the fact that the status symbols and positions you’re seeking are rarely worth it because it is something that is never truly yours; you’re just a placeholder for the position. At the very least, if you take on the role with status, don’t let it get to your head and prepare yourself to deal with losing it. Free yourself from society's rules and regulations. You deserve love, respect, and happiness regardless of your station.
