True happiness is to enjoy the present, without anxious dependence upon the future, not to amuse ourselves with either hopes or fears but to rest satisfied with what we have, which is sufficient, for he that is so, wants nothing. The greatest blessings of mankind are within us and within our reach. A wise man is content with his lot, whatever it may be, without wishing for what he has not.
Seneca
Thousands of years ago, men and women worked day and night in pursuit of bigger homes, fancier clothes, and finer wines. Fast forward to today, and nothing has changed. It’s perplexing that Seneca had written this because he was wealthy. Coincidentally Buddha was born into royalty as a prince and renounced all material possessions, and is quoted for saying practically the same thing. I’ve even seen modern-day elites describe a similar nature of desire and how when you get everything you want, you’ll only be left wanting more. All of this goes to show you’ll need to eventually become content with what you have. Pursue your ambitions but have this realization early so you don’t spend you’re entire life trying to fill the bottomless pit called desire.
